Samsung T5 EVO portable SSD offers a whopping 8 terabytes of storage

Posted on November 15, 2023

Samsung just launched the T5 EVO, a consumer-oriented solid state drive that provides up to 8 terabytes of storage, the most currently available in a portable SSD.

And the lower-capacity versions cost less than the equivalent Samsung T9 pro-grade drives that also hit store shelves recently.

Samsung T5 EVO SSD adds heaps of room for images or videos to Mac, iPad or iPhone

iCloud and other cloud-storage options are convenient if you can always count on an internet connection, but a drive you can hold in your hand offers faster access and more security. The new Samsung T5 EVO comes in capacities from 2TB to an eye-popping 8TB.

“More people than ever need increased storage capacity options to preserve their favorite memories, videos, and content,” said Jose Hernandez, Samsung’s senior director of memory product marketing, in a Tuesday press release. “The T5 EVO provides the perfect solution – with an even higher capacity of 8TB, which helps ensure you no longer need to erase old pictures from your device to save new ones.”

The SSD connects to Mac, iPad and iPhone 15 via USB-C, and supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 so it can transfer data at up to 5Gbps.

The drive is pocketable at 3.7 inches by 1.6 inches, and it weighs just 3.6 ounces. A ring is integrated into the design so the accessory can be easily clipped to a backpack.

The T5 EVO comes in black and dark gray. “Its metal body and rubberized surface provide extra protection against drops of up to six and a half feet so your files are much more likely to survive a few bumps and bruises as you go about your life,” Samsung said.

Launched Tuesday

The Samsung T5 EVO hit store shelves Tuesday. Don’t confuse it with the older version of the T5 that offers a significantly slower connection speed.

For comparison, the recently released Samsung T9 SSD costs $239 for the 2TB version and $439 for the 4TB version. It’s faster, and intended for professionals.
